South Korean - apparently it’s derived from an army vehicle.

It’s basically a Korean copy of a Jeep, based off a military vehicle, made by a company which was later taken over by Kia, and this one was actually renamed to the Kia Rocsta, with some slight styling differences.

Strange I wonder if they actually sold them here or it’s imported.

Asia Motors was a Korean car and truck maker (but mostly trucks) that ran into trouble in 1976 and was bought by Kia. In 1997, Kia went bankrupt mainly due to losses at Asia Motors and the ‘Asian flu’ financial crisis. Hyundai saved Kia’s ass, which in turn caused Ford to lose it’s stake in Kia (As a result, no more Festiva or Aspire). The Hyundai-owned Kia shut Asia Motors down completely in 1999.

And this particular vehicle was Asia Motors’ version of a Jeep... named the Rocsta.
Given that Asia Motors was supposedly shut down in 1999, it’s surprising that is is a 2000 model year. Probably is a leftover of production that was done in 1999.
In a way, it’s the predecessor to the first-gen Kia Sportage.

I think they sold them in Germany and probably in some Eastern European countries. Not sure about UK though.

Wasn’t there some guy that went to jail for securities fraud over some scam that involved assembling Korean jeeps in the US and signing up dealers? I remember Dateline or something did a report on it back in the late ‘90s, but I forget if it involved the Rocsta or the Korando. I always thought it was the Korando, but seeing this now makes me question that.

I’m not sure, I’m from the UK so it’s not something I’d have heard of. Interesting if true.

Can confirm, they did import them officially into the UK for a bit as ‘round about the cheapest 4x4 you could buy.

It looks to be a Suzuki FJ / SJ derived vehicle, with a Jeep lookalike nose grafted on. I bet the mechanics are all Suzuki, or based on that.
